Between 1888 and the early 1900s, hundreds of hotels and inns across the UK proudly displayed a special symbol: a two-foot wide, cast-iron “Winged Wheel”.
The Winged Wheel was a welcome sight for cyclists at that time. It meant the establishment was partnered with the Cyclists’ Touring Club (CTC) and guaranteed members a warm reception, hearty food and discounted rates.
Many wheels have been lost over the years but hundreds still adorn buildings today, having survived development, refurbishment, theft and over a century of British Weather.
This website is dedicated to preserving the history, knowledge and locations of these iconic Winged Wheel signs.
